  • MEDITERRANEAN STUDIES ASSOCIATION'S 5TH ANNUAL INTERNATIONAL CONGRESS, "IBERIA AND THE MEDITERRANEAN" (May 29- June 1/2002, Universidad de Granada)
  • CALL FOR PAPERS
    Iberia and the Mediterranean
    Universidad de Granada, Spain.
The Mediterranean Studies Association's 5th annual International Congress, "Iberia and the Mediterranean," will be held on May 29- June 1, 2002 at the Universidad de Granada in Granada, Spain. Papers and sessions on all subjects relating to the Mediterranean region and Mediterranean cultures around the world from all periods are encouraged. Following a day of optional excursions, including the Alhambra, the congress will open with a plenary session and reception on the evening of May 29. Over the course of the next days over 150 scholarly papers will be delivered before an international audience of about 250 scholars, academics, and experts in a wide range of fields. Held in the center of the old city at the Centro de Lenguas Modernas, the official languages of the congress are Spanish and English. In addition, sessions in any Mediterranean language are welcome. A number of special events are being planned for congress participants that will highlight the unique cultural aspects of Granada. The congress is sponsored by the Mediterranean Studies Association, the Universidad de Granada, the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, Arizona State University, and the University of Kansas. Selected revised papers will be considered for publication in the Association's journal, Mediterranean Studies.
The Mediterranean Studies Association is an interdisciplinary organization which promotes the scholarly study of Mediterranean cultures in all aspects and disciplines. It is particularly concerned with the ideas and ideals of western Mediterranean cultures from Late Antiquity to the Enlightenment and their influence beyond these geographical and temporal boundaries.
Proposals for papers and sessions are now being solicited. Papers and proposals for sessions are encouraged which focus on the conference theme of the relationship of Iberia to the Mediterranean, but any paper or session proposal with a Mediterranean theme, from any period and any discipline, will be considered. Proposals for roundtable discussions
of a topical work or theme are also welcome. The typical panel will include three papers, each lasting twenty minutes, a chair, and (optionally) a commentator. For examples of paper and session topics, and the range of subjects, see the programs from Lisbon (1998), Coimbra (1999), Salvador (2000), and Aix-en-Provence (2001) at the MSA web site: www.mediterraneanstudies.org.
Proposals should include a 200-word abstract for each paper and a one-page curriculum vitae for each participant, including chairs and commentators. Each participant's name, e-mail and regular address, and phone number should also be listed. Proposals are now being solicited for the first round of consideration. The first deadline for submissions is December 1, 2001, though proposals will be accepted after that date.
Please send proposals to: Mediterranean Studies Association, P.O. Box 212, East Sandwich, MA 02537, USA. For information on the congress or the Association contact MSA@umassd.edu
  • 15th CONFERENCE OF THE INTERNATIONAL SOCIETY FOR THE INVESTIGATION AND PROMOTION OF WIND MUSIC (IGEB) - (July/2002, South Tyrol, Italy)
  • CALL FOR PAPERS:
The 15th conference of the International Society for the Investigation and Promotion of Wind Music (IGEB) will take place in Lana, South Tyrol, Italy, from July 4th to 9th, 2002.
Suggested topics for the conference include:
Historical and contemporary cross connections and influences in international wind music development.
The influences of traditional music on contemporary band compositions (from the arrangement of folk songs to including traditional music from non-European cultural areas)
Composing for the wind band: a new and rapid possibility for contemporary composers to develop an international reputation? (For ex., De Meij [Lord of the Rings] or Ito [Gloriosa], whose compositions were heard on all continents in a very short time. Can this be compared to the reception of the band works of Hindemith and Schoenberg?)
Directors, musicians, educators, musicologists and all people interested in wind band music are invited to submit papers on the above as well as general research topics and reports on theses and dissertations.

  • THE INTELLECTUAL FRONTIERS OF MUSIC (June/2002, Scotland UK)
  • University of Aberdeen, Scotland - Music Research Group
Conference Announcement and Call for Papers
THE INTELLECTUAL FRONTIERS OF MUSIC Aberdeen University 23-24 June 2002
The place of music within the wider spectrum of disciplines is a subject of great interest. Does music engage the mind as well as the emotions, and if it does, by what means and of what experience does it increase our understanding? With electro-acoustic music and sonic art firmly established as legitimate compositional fields, this subject takes on an even more interesting turn as digital technology continues to permeate all areas of music.
Of late a number of books have been published that explore the relation of philosophy and theology to music, with these questions in mind. The Music Research Group of the University of Aberdeen (http://www.abdn.ac.uk/mrg/) has a special interest in this area of inquiry and proposes to host a conference on the intellectual frontiers of music. Three sessions are planned in which members of the MRG will present research material.
