RESUMO:

Os movimentos homossexuais têm lutado por seus direitos no mundo todo e, nesse processo, questões relativas à família, ao casamento e à filiação fazem parte das reivindicações. Lésbicas optam pela maternidade e mulheres que se tornaram mães em relações heterossexuais envolvem-se em relações lésbicas. Dessa forma, novas práticas sociais surgem à medida que a maternidade e a homossexualidade são articuladas. Tais práticas ganham formas distintas e particulares, variando conforme o contexto sócio-cultural em que essas mulheres vivem. Esta pesquisa compara os efeitos da mencionada articulação entre maternidade e homossexualidade, nas regiões metropolitanas de Campinas (São Paulo, Brasil) e Toronto (Ontário, Canadá), analisando os jogos de poder construídos nas relações entre essas mulheres, entre elas e a lei, entre elas e a sociedade, as expectativas sobre a maternidade, as hierarquias, a violência, as políticas identitárias e a busca pelo reconhecimento e pela igualdade, enquanto a maternidade aparece como definidora dos lugares de cada ator social na rede de relações. Portanto, assumo como foco da análise as maternidades e o lugar destas nas relações entre as mães biológicas e suas companheiras ou namoradas, bem como o lugar das maternidades das companheiras das mães biológicas nas relações destas com os filhos consangüíneos da sua companheira.

ABSTRACT:

The homosexual movements have struggled for their righs all over the world and in this context issues on the family, marriage and filiation are part of their claims. Lesbians choose to become mothers, and women who became mothers through heterosexual relations get themselves involved in lesbian relationships. Consequently, new social practices arise when motherhood and homosexuality are articulated. These practices are varied and particularly biased by the social and cultural contexts where these women are situated. This research compares the outcome of the mentioned articulation between motherhood and homossexuality in the metropolitan region of Campinas (Sao Paulo, Brazil) and of Toronto (Ontario, Canada), analysing the relations of power upon female couples, between them and the law, between them and society, the expectations on mothering, the hierarchies, violence, politics of identities, and their efforts to be recognized and to live with equity. In this analisys, the concept of motherhood seems to define the social actors’ places in the network of relationships. Therefore,  the focus of the analisys is on the concept and practices of mothering, on the place of its practices in the biological mothers’ relationships to their partners or girlfriends, as well as the place of mothering practices for the birth mothers’ partners in their relationships to their partners’ children.
